Watercolor Painting

Through fun an engaging projects, students will become masters of watercolor as they explore fun topics and best techniques. This is a great class for beginning young artists and anyone interested in exploring watercolors.

Students will create their own abstract shape collages inspired by artists such as Beatriz Milhaze, Henry Matisse, and Marcus Oakley. Students will learn about organic and geometric shapes, composition, and color theory to create one of a kind designs.

Intro to Collage

Storytelling Tapestry

Students will learn the art of storying telling through tapestry. Students will create a book with each page being a different tapestry that they create themselves.

Hooked on Crochet with Linette Knight (grades 9-12)

Learn all the skills needed to make simple projects such as hats, scarves, wash clothes, small blankets and flowers. Receive hands on instruction in how to read patterns and show of your newly learned skills by presenting a finished project.

Digital Comics

Students will be introduced to visual sequential storytelling using a digital platform. Learn to create short comic scripts, thumbnails for pages, digital penciling and inking as well as how to add color and lettering to your comics.

There aren’t many places on Earth as exciting as Egypt! Students will explore the ancient legends and create amazing pieces of art such as “Cartouches” carved with Hieroglyphics, life-sized paintings of Egyptian Gods and Goddesses, Sculptured amulets and Scarab Beetles, and Papyrus paintings!

Weave it Wild! 3D Creatures
with Jan French (grades 3-5)

Students will learn the basics of loom weaving to create a simply shaped 3D creature. Students will learn about and use a Peruvian style backstrap loom, then embellish and sew together a small creature.

Students learn techniques for working in miniature while observing how other artists use scale within their artwork. Students hone their creative thinking skills by repurposing recycled materials to create small plant terrariums, mini tin box worlds, and cigar box cityscapes. Students let their big imaginations drive these tiny explorations.

Surreal Collage
with Sonya Drum (grades 6-8)

Students learn the history and essentials of collage making while developing an appreciation and understanding of surrealism. Students create their own surrealist collages using vintage, contemporary and upcycled materials to create imaginary creatures, worlds, and happenings. This course heightens students’ compositional and color skills while allowing them to express themselves in a deeply personal and introspective way.

Weave it Wild! Animalia

Big Food Little Food

Students explore how other artists have celebrated food throughout art history, then make their own food sculptures! We explore students’ love of healthy and not so healthy foods through large and small scale sculptures. From itty-bitty cakes to colossal donuts, they gain a deeper understanding of how artists use scale within art, then use polymer clay and paper mache to make their food dreams come true.

T-shirt Factory

Why buy it when you can make it yourself? This course teaches students a variety of t-shirt fabric dying and modification techniques. They learn simple to complex tie dying patterns, bleach design and distressing, as well as fabric painting and stenciling. Students create personal designs that celebrate their creative style while learning the skills needed to produce designs to share or sell. Play Painting will encourage young artists to to channel their energy through art! From messy painting projects, to expressive dance and theater games, Play Painting will bring out the creative explorer in everyone.

Nature Assemblage Shadow Box

Portfolio Intensive: Watercolor

This is an intensive class designed to assist students in developing their personal art portfolios. This class will focus on developing and refining a student’s technique, vocabulary, color theory and the critique process.

Character Design

Students will learn what makes for effective character design and create characters and reference sheets that can be used for illustration, games, animation and more. Our process will take us through silhouette techniques, color schemes, poses and facial expressions to ultimately a final design.

Bird Houses

If you can dream it, we can make it into a birdhouse! This incredible art camp features each child painting and decorating a birdhouse of their choice with whatever theme they choose! All supplies are included, and students will also create additional art projects throughout the process of creating their themed birdhouse, making this a jam-packed week of exciting art exploration!

Mega Mess
with Tara Kernan (grades 1-3)

This camp will introduce students to mixed media techniques that’ll translate to a HUGE canvas. Students will explore acrylic painting techniques, texture application techniques and fabric incorporation. Students will be free to chose a topic and combine their ideas into a MEGA art work.

Monoprinting Experiments
with Eric Gibbons (grades 3-5)

Printmaking

Students will learn several monoprinting techniques using traditional printing ink and sharpie markers. Tracing is not only allowed, but encouraged in this fun exploratory class! All skill levels are welcome as we learn techniques from artist such as Klee and Warhol.

Bonsai Wire Trees
with Eric Gibbons (grades 3-5)

Students will learn about the history of bonsai, and learn how to use basic tools to cut wire and design a tree. Students will finalize their trees by applying an array of craft items or foil to make leaves.

Intro to Procreate

In this camp, students will learn the basics of Procreate. Using real-world professional examples, students will learn basic tips and tricks associated with using Procreate and it’s tools to make unique artworks. Ipad + Procreate will be required.

In this camp, students will learn the art of visual storytelling and sequential art. Using real-world professional examples, students will learn basic tips and tricks associated with webcomics, graphic novels, newspaper strip comics, and issue series. Students will then combine what they’ve learned to design their own original comic.

Printmaking

In this camp students will be introduced to the exciting world of digital art! We shall explore character design using digital art software. Attendees will learn how to prepare their digital canvas, the basics of using the tools in the software and tips and tricks on how to take their art to the next level!

Contemporary Folk Art
with Tara Kernan (grades 1-3)

Contemporary Mexican and American Folk-Artists are known for creating brightly colored and boldly patterned art through painting, metal relief and sculptures. Students will use acrylic paint on canvas to produce adorable animals, beautiful still-life designs, and elaborate landscape paintings. We will also explore the artistic culture of the Oaxacan people of Mexico while designing colorful metal reliefs and constructing intricately painted plaster animals.

Musical Masterpieces

Listen to the music and visualize how it makes you feel! Artists such as Picasso, Kandinsky & Matisse have used music as an inspiration for their visual art, and now it’s your turn to be inspired by the beat! We will let the music tell us how to express ourselves in our own masterpieces through collage and painting techniques!

Japanese Tissue Painting
with Eric Gibbons (grades 3-5)

Students explore the art of Japanese tissue painting. Students will create an image and, instead of paint, will use colored tissue and glue as the main medium while we explore this ancient art of Japan. Vivid colors and delightful patterns are a hallmark of this technique.

Natural Dyeing

Students will learn about the techniques associated with creating pop-up sculptures and apply their skills to create an amazing image that will impress their viewers. Students will explore simple and more complex pop-up sculptures, learn about Kirigami, and create a final artwork resembling a page from a pop-up book.

DIY Zine

Very Van Gogh

This art camp would be in conjunction/response to the “Immersive Van Gogh” exhibit that is set to come to Raleigh soon. Students would explore the many styles of Van Gogh and participate in various art projects to better understand Van Gogh’s artistic process.

Sometimes a piece of art can speak for itself, and other times, a short statement or simple poem can help inspire others to see the beauty within the art, and themselves. Students will explore various painting and printmaking techniques to create pieces of art that are as unique as they are. By including words and poetry within their portraits, students will create extraordinary masterpieces making both the process and the masterpiece special and memorable.

Collage!

Working with felt has never been more fun! During this camp participants will learn about modern artist Lucy Sparrow and her take on the combination of felt and pop art! Participants are going to learn basic sewing skills, how to create paper templates and develop their own items for the Artspace Mini-mart!

Found Object Sculpture

Students will use found objects and other collected materials to build creative sculptures. Students will also learn about the best techniques for attaching their materials.

Photo Transfer

In this camp, students will have the opportunity to use laser printed images and transfer techniques to transfer their images to a canvas or textiles. Students will be able to use their own images or choose from royalty free images provided by the instructor.

Students will explore Color Theory through a variety of materials and techniques which include: paper collage, acrylic and watercolor painting, oil pastel blending, and color mixing with modeling clay. Each project will connect with an influential artist, illustrator or author of children’s literature creating a multifaceted artistic experience.

Dream Room: Unpacking Interior Design

Participants of this camp get the opportunity to become interior designers for a fun dream room project! We will take a dive into learning different styles of interior design, and the intricate thought process behind creating different rooms in a variety of living spaces. Participants will be able to design and transform cardboard, paper, found objects and other mixed media into their very own dream room!

Expressive Collage

Slow Stitch a Pouch

Learn basic sewing skills to hand sew a coin purse or a small drawstring pouch for treasures. Slow down and stitch in a meditative way, use scraps from old clothes or other materials that hold meaning to you.

In this class we will explore techniques for creating different types of illustrations. Students will learn the basic elements and principles of design that make up a successful visual piece, as well as how to use reference photos in a drawing, compositional techniques and color theory. Students will design a variety of illustration concepts and a final piece of their choosing.
