Paper Pulp

In this hands-on class, you will learn the process of papermaking along with exciting printing techniques on the paper you make. Embracing the communal aspect of papermaking, you will experiment with pulp mixtures and colors, leaving the class with your very own surfaces to make art on or with. There will be daily demonstrations with paper, discussions of paper as an artistic and borderless medium, and ample time for play.

Supersized Sculptures

Embark on a fascinating journey into the world of sculptural art with a “Scaling Creativity” project inspired by the renowned artist, Claes Oldenburg. Over the span of this immersive week, you will dive into a unique approach to transforming everyday objects into larger-than-life sculptures and will take on the challenge of creating your own monumental pieces. As your sculptures take form, you will investigate the vibrant world of colors and textures and learn basic painting techniques and color theory to infuse your creations with life and personality.

Exploring the -ISMs in Art with Peter Marín (grades 9-12)

-ISMs is an in-depth class that explores the major -ISMs (aka movements) that formed the complex art of our times. Starting with Impressionism and ending with Postmodernism, you will investigate how they came to be part of the cultural fabric of artmaking today. This is a great class for the developing high school student in the arts as a way to familiarize yourself with the major movements of the 20th century and understand the art that marks those periods. Classes include daily slide presentations, critiques and art assignments.

Painting the Abstract

Working within the framework of the elements of art and the principals of design, young artists will learn to create interesting and cohesive abstract paintings. Weave it Wild! Reptiles + Friends
with Jan French (grades 3-5)

Daily advanced fiber tech demos, basics of animal anatomy in art, and guided museum field trip (weather permitting) will all be a part of this camp!

Natural Dyeing

In this camp you will learn the various methods to dye fabric naturally with common plants like black walnuts, Marigolds, Eucalyptus and more! At the end of the camp, you will be able to make a piece (like a tote bag) with all the fabrics they have dyed!

Isometric Realms: Crafting TTRPG Worlds

Step into an immersive summer camp experience where you will dive into the art of crafting isometric world maps tailored for tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs). In this camp, budding artists will embark on an exciting journey of designing and illustrating intricate and expansive landscapes that form the backdrop for thrilling TTRPG adventures. This hands-on camp will focus on mastering perspective, composition, and detailing to render captivating terrains, cities, dungeons, and realms.

Bookbinding Basics

Kamishibai Storytelling Illustration
with Addie Hirschten (grades 3-5)

Kamishibai illustration, with it’s rich history, is the originator of the Manga comic style. In this workshop you learn about Kamishibai, a traditional form of Japanese storytelling using large illustrated cards in a mini theater, then create your very own story on large illustration cards. At the end, participants will share their story with the others in our mini Kamishibai theater.

Dive into the world of Canva, a graphic design and digital art platform used by creatives all over the world. Become an expert with using Canva’s free version that provides all the stock photos, stickers, fonts, templates, shapes, and colors needed to create bold impactful designs. In this class you’ll be able to design moodboards, logos, sweatshirt and t-shirt designs, digital art, social media posts, and videos. No experience needed. Students will be required to provide their own digital device such as a laptop or tablet.

It’s show time! In this camp, you’ll have the space and materials to bring your favorite picture book to life, onstage. Campers will select a book, then learn all about their characters, plots, as well as how to act, direct, and design an entire show. We’ll learn about set design, costume design and even how to manage your stage.

This class with teach the history behind zines as well as a demonstration of how to create one. You will be given a variety of materials such as markers, paint, construction paper, magazines, etc. to create your own zines. We’ll go over how to plan making one to executing one. This camp is meant to be a chill class for students to learn from each other, share ideas, and create some cool zines.

Nature Assemblage Shadow Box

In the spirit of found objects, pick from an extensive collection of nature items and assemble them in a pleasing arrangement and glue them into place. Young artists will be able to create a unique nature inspired shadowbox that tells a story or shares an idea.

Sketchbook Painting

You’ll exlpore a variety of approaches to painting working primarily in a sketchbook. Learn how to use your sketchbook like a professional artist and to make your passion for art more accessible and portable. You’ll refine your skill as an artist by focusing on still life, landscape, portraits and abstraction. Artspace will provide each student with a new sketchbook, but you are encouraged to bring in your own as well.

Color Theory for Painters

Color Theory demystified and made useful and accessible. This course allows the student to understand color as a result of direct exercises and through outcomes that are produced by working with color in simplified terms. This class is essential for any student thinking about art in higher education.

Color Explorers

Venture into the fantastic world of color! You will hop from primary, secondary, and tertiary colors to color mixing with clay, collage, and paint. We will make stops to learn some facts, history, and emotions about color, such as why a taxi is yellow. Along the way we will meet artists such as Alma Thomas, Alexander Calder, and Henri Matisse to see how they used color in their work and then make our own color inspired creations.

Crafting Cool Cities
with Becky Joye (grades 1-3)

In this camp you will cut, craft, and paint your own 3D buildings! From houses to skyscrapers, we’ll design structures in the style of artist Bodys Isek Kingelez, who built fantastic cities out of ordinary materials such as cardboard tubes, tape, foil, and yarn. At the end of the week, you will combine your individual creations to form a city of your imagination.

Let’s get inspired by ‘Mac and the Magic’, an exciting picture book full of strange creatures who have wild adventures and make new friends.

In this camp we will learn all about the things that make picture books great. You will have the chance to draw your own characters and write a story about the things that excite you. We will then put all your ideas and illustrations together into your very own picture book! Don’t forget to bring your favorite picture books for inspiration, too!

Sewing Foundation

In this class you will learn the basics of sewing using a sewing machine. This includes how to set-up and use a sewing machine, understanding different fabrics, terms in patterns, different stitches and notions. A variety of projects will be provided so you can practice and have works to take home and use.

This includes how to set-up and use a sewing machine, understanding different fabrics, terms in patterns, different stitches and notions. A variety of projects will be provided so you can practice and have works to take home and use.

Embark on a fascinating journey into the world of sculptural art with a “Scaling Creativity” project inspired by the renowned artist, Claes Oldenburg. Over the span of this immersive week, you will dive into a unique approach to transforming everyday objects into larger-than-life sculptures and will take on the challenge of creating your own monumental pieces.As your sculptures take form, you will investigate the vibrant world of colors and textures and learn basic painting techniques and color theory to infuse your creations with life and personality.

You will use various materials to create your own art to interpret these artists’ works. This class will cover Contemporary art and cultural topics related to Ecology, Justice and Racism. We will also brainstorm ways in which artworks can be created into larger public art works. By exploring creative methods of art-making in this camp, you will learn to use your art as a powerful tool to express your ideas that can change the world!

Abstract Mural Project

It’s time to make your mark at Artspace! Join us for a collabortive mural project that’ll challenge you to work collaboratively to design and paint a mural directly on our walls. This class will do a deep dive into the world of public murals and what it takes to make art that speaks to a community. You’ll master the steps involved with being a mural artists, including brainstorming, sketching, critiquing and finally painting. Please note, this is an intermediate level class and students who participate are expected to have higher than average drawing and painting skills.
