Your practice at Artspace

Frequently Asked Questions

A studio lease lasts for one year (beginning in July and ending in June), and can be renewed up to four times for a total maximum term of 5 years.

Selected artists may move in as early as July 11.

Term limits help ensure that subsidized studio spaces remain accessible to a broad range of artists over time.

Previous studio artists who did not complete a full five-year term are eligible to apply. Previous studio artists who had their studio at Artspace for more than five years are not.

Artspace is open to artists working in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, ceramics, printmaking, textile and fashion design, installation art, and more. However, artists working with toxic materials, hazardous machinery, etc., will not be considered due to limitations within the building.

Artspace studio artists are expected to work in their studios for 15–20 hours per week during public hours (Thursday–Saturday, 11 AM–7 PM; Sunday, 11 AM–4 PM). This helps ensure visitors can explore open studios and meet artists during their visit, while also supporting opportunities for artist engagement and sales.

Studio artists have 24-hour access to the building and are welcome to work in their studios outside of public hours as well.

The studio must serve as the artists’ primary workspace. Artists can choose to sell work in their studio, but they must use the space to actively work on their art practice.

Unfortunately, we are not able to offer parking for our studio artists. There are many parking options nearby, including garages with free parking on weekends and after 7pm.

Service animals are always allowed in Artspace studios. Studio artists may bring their non-service pets at their own discretion, but are responsible for any damages they may cause.

Please reach out to Alexandra Jane, Artist Programs Manager, at awalker@artspacenc.org.

During open hours, Artspace’s front desk is staffed. Each studio has an individual lock, and the building is equipped with security cameras and an alarm system.
