As part of our mission, Artspace engages the community in the creative process by encouraging visitors to observe our artists as they work. Artspace artists create and exhibit finished works of art in their studios. Artspace invites the public to engage in conversations with our artists, discuss the creative process, learn about new techniques and tips, and purchase a work of art directly from the artist.
Artspace provides long-term and short-term studio opportunities to professional and emerging artists. Long-term leases are available to Artspace Artist Members and short-term residencies are provided to Southeastern emerging artists through the Regional Emerging Artist Residency Program and national, professional artists through the Summer Artist Residency Program. Currently 28 studio spaces are occupied by Artspace Artist Members and two studios are designated for the Regional Emerging Artist Residency Program.
Artists within the building represent a wide variety of media, including watercolor, landscapes, portraiture, mixed media, clay, printmaking, sculpture, jewelry-making, felt-making, and many others.
In the summer of 2011, Artspace implemented a new structure of term limits for our long-term studio spaces. Artspace’s studio structure has been adjusted to further increase the breadth of work present in the studio spaces over time and the number of artists served each year by defining a maximum number of occupancy years. All long-term studio artists are now given a 3-year term with the possibility of 2 renewable terms, for a maximum of 9 years.
