Painting A Pet

IN THE TREES rising 3rd - 5th grade *CLOSED - Waiting List Available*
Draw and paint different types of trees, as well as the animals that live in and around them. Your paintings will show your favorite forest animals such as bluebirds, rabbits, and deer, in their native habitats.

DRAWING FROM NATURE *New Class* rising 6th - 8th grade
Be an observer and recorder of the natural world! Embark on drawing excursions to make images of plants, flowers, and birds. You will build strong drawing skills, including the use of positive/negative space, line, shape, shading and color. You will learn to use a variety of media including graphite, charcoal, colored pencil, pastels, and collage.

PRINTED POSTERS & JOURNALS *New Class* rising 7th - 10th grade
Create a poster using exciting printmaking techniques. Students will create a linoleum block that will then be transformed into colorful prints as well as a simple journal and a poster. Learn how to print by hand, as well as how to print with a modern etching press.

AROUND THE WORLD *New Class* rising 3rd – 5th grade*CLOSED - Waiting List Available*
Travel around the world of art to discover the diversity of paintings throughout the ages. We'll stop in France during the 18th century to paint like the Impressionists. Next we’ll land in the U.S. to create action paintings like the 19th century Abstract Expressionists, and then we’re off to Latin America to work on an Amate Bark painting! In this fun class you'll create paintings using the unique materials and styles of artists from around the world.

BUILD A POP PAINTING rising 6th - 8th grade
In this session we will be making paintings without paint...well, maybe a little paint! By assembling various objects, we will "build out" our paintings. Have you ever imagined that a pile of clothespins could be arranged to resemble a tree? Or that the pages ripped from a comic book could become a foundation for a colorful wall-hanging? Or what if we just take the paint brush itself and make a piece of art with it! From trash to treasure, conceptual pieces of art have just one requirement -- an imagination! Designing, assembling, and thinking outside-of-the-box will come in handy as well. So go and raid the old toy chest for small objects or collect some old CD's and let's start building a painting.

SURREALISM FOR REAL*New Class* rising 7th - 10th grade
Using imagery from dreams, memories, and feelings, you will interpret reality in inventive ways. Experiments pairing unexpected images together will be part of the fun of this class! Using acrylic paint we will make whimsical and fun paintings inspired by artists such as Henri Magritte and Salvador Dali.

Create your own large fish, turtle, hermit crab, turtle, sea-horse or other marine life sculpture using newspaper, tape, cardboard, found objects, and plaster. We will start by building the armature, then we will add plaster, acrylic paint, and final details.

THE ART OF LANGUAGE *New Class* rising 6th - 8th grade
Explore the expressive quality that Picasso found in lettering and words. We will create unique books, inspired by ancient illuminated manuscripts, incorporating drawing, calligraphy, printmaking, and sculpture – all using your own initials!

SHOUT IT OUT rising 7th - 10th grade
Explore themes that interest you personally through the use of hand cut stencils. In this class you will learn the basics of creating unique and exciting t-shirts and posters. The process will use items that are readily available at local art stores and around your house. This is a great opportunity to express yourself to the world around you.
Please plan to bring 4-6 new t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc. Items should be 50% polyester, 50% cotton.

Animal Molas HANDBUILT POTTERY rising 3rd – 5th grade *CLOSED - Waiting List Available*
While learning the basics of handbuilding, let your imagination be your guide. Pinch, coil, and slab methods will be covered, as we explore both functional and sculptural projects.

EXPLORING THE PAINTED LANDSCAPE rising 6th - 8th grade
Use a new approach to delve into the unique characteristics of the landscape! Acrylic paint will be used to express your artistic vision and to represent your favorite landscape. You will learn color mixing, paint application methods, ways of utilizing a variety of tools to create texture, and other basic painting techniques that will aid in making fun and exciting paintings. By the end of this class you will have developed a one-of-a-kind completed work of art that will be ready to display.

DRAWING WITH CHARCOAL *New Class* rising 7th - 10th grade
Learn how to draw from observation using still life and photographs for your starting point. You will learn a variety of techniques using charcoal. The focus of this week will be on shape, composition, line, and value. Still lifes will be set up with dramatic lighting so that you learn about value and the elements of light. You will create many sketches to explore composition, as well as a few finished drawings.

Hand Papermaking

FACE UP TO IT rising 3rd - 5th grade
Let your personality shine through! Utilizing photos and mirrors in this imaginative class, you will learn to draw and paint creative self-portraits and portraits of friends and family members. Experiment with pastels, watercolors, tempera, and more to produce portraits that are full of life!

Magic of Make-Up STAINED GLASS WALL MOSAICS rising 6th - 8th grade
Get ready to create your own mosaic masterpiece! Develop your own design, transfer it to plywood, and learn a variety of mosaic techniques including glass cutting, classic mosaic laying, and grouting. Your finished piece will be a beautiful, out-of-this-world wall hanging!

UNDERWATER MURAL *New Class* rising 7th - 10th grade
Design and paint an underwater scene in the Artspace Connecting Gallery (corridor out to City Market) using acrylic paints. We will plan the mural in advance, then transfer ideas to the wall, making editing decisions as the mural evolves. Students will learn to collaborate and work on a large scale, creating a public piece of art that will be on display for three months.

Learn how to paint your friendly furry friends! After studying the eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and body of pet(s) that you choose, you will sketch then paint the pet(s) on canvas.
Students should bring photographs of their favorite pet(s) on the first day of class.

SOFT SCULPTURE rising 6th - 8th grade
Explore a variety of textile traditions and innovative ways to create modern, one-of-a-kind sculptures. Beginning with felting, an ancient nomadic craft form, we will construct functional objects such as hats and bags, as well as fine art sculptures. We will learn about coiling, a sculptural practice that creates forms using a wrapping method. Finally, we will use a variety of stitching techniques that can be included in our sculptures. While learning about 3-D felting, coiling, and stitching, we will also look at contemporary artists who use these techniques to create ground-breaking artwork, as well as investigate the origins of these media.

SCREENPRINTING MADE EASY rising 7th - 10th grade
Learn to print your own designs on t-shirts, fabric, cards, and paper using paper stencils and the drawing-fluid/screen-filler methods. Achieve amazing effects and create multiples of your own artwork with this simple and enjoyable medium. Even if you have never screenprinted before, you will be delighted with the results!
Students should bring several clean, pre-washed, light colored shirts with them. 100% cotton is preferred but 50% cotton, 50% polyester is acceptable. The shirts should not have collars or pockets and should not be ribbed.

THAT'S ME! SUPER-SIZED! rising 3rd - 5th grade
In this class everything is about you! Create an interesting magazine and a life-sized collage all about you! You will use various materials such as wallpaper, wool, fabric, wood, and paint. We’ll have lots of options, but you should also bring along some of your personal items to use and trade, such as photos of yourself, your favorite music, favorite magazine, old clothing, buttons, stickers, and more!

Learn how to take your doodles to the next level! In this class you will learn how to expand your sketches into fully developed movie or video game characters. If you love to draw fantasy and science fiction characters, this is the perfect class for you!

PLEIN AIR--DRAWING & PAINTING IN THE 'OPEN AIR' *CLOSED - Waiting List Available*

This class is an on-location art experience. We will be going outside in the morning light and using the sights and sounds around us for inspiration. You may be drawn to the giant oak trees or a bustling sidewalk cafe. Demonstrations in several different mediums will help the students think outside-of-the-box. Collage, subtractive drawing techniques, and various strategies for using paints and pastels will all be discussed. This class is truly a multi-media workshop with some unexpected creative processes. It will be fast-paced with an emphasis on fun!

CREATE LIKE AN EGYPTIAN *CLOSED - Waiting List Available*
rising 3rd – 5th grade
Using symbols and themes from ancient Egypt, create mummy boxes and mummies, small tomb animals, canopic jars, and a relief tile. You will create an identity for your mummy, and then make fun objects to represent his or her life and work.

In this class you will learn how to make a variety of dishes, bowls, and plates by making your own plaster molds and using slabs of clay. You will also learn how to hand-build rims and feet for your dishes as well as add texture and color.

MIXED MEDIA ARTIST TRADING CARDS *New Class* rising 7th - 10th grade
Artist trading cards are miniature works of art measuring 2.5 x 3.5
inches. Working this small. you will have the chance to make
multiple works of art using several different media. Possible media and techniques include collage, acrylic, watercolor, and pen and ink techniques. We’ll make enough works that we will have a portfolio swap, keeping some of our own and adding to our collections with works by our classmates!

FANTASTIC FANTASY SCULPTURES *New Class* rising 3rd - 5th grade

In this class we’ll create big, colorful sculptures like the French artist Niki de saint Phalle. We’ll design self-portraits or fantastical creatures and create them in papier maché or plaster. These colorful figures, embellished with paint, beads, glitter, and buttons, will be a great addition to your room!

BABY SOCK CREATURES *New Class* rising 6th - 8th grade
In this class we’ll create one-of-a-kind creatures using a pair of baby socks! We will learn basic hand sewing skills to make and embellish all kinds of animals and creatures. Back stitching, basic embroidery, and button sewing skills are just some of the techniques that you will learn. We will build the creatures from a pair of socks and then embellish them with buttons, trim, and wool felt. Scary or sweet, no two will be alike!

 IT'S OUT OF WAX: Encaustic Painting

In this class we will learn the techniques of encaustic painting, an ancient medium combining beeswax and pigment. Explore painting, layering, and scraping using encaustic wax, and combine these techniques with other mixed media and collage to create an extraordinary work of art!

FANTASTIC FELTING rising 3rd - 5th grade *CLOSED - Waiting List Available*
We will learn how to felt using wool just like nomadic tribes from Asia. By using water and soap we will turn wool fibers into something spectacular. This technique is a fun way to create a “soft” sculpture such as an animal -- or something functional like a hat or a bag. We will also learn how to dye our own colored wool using kool-aid!

PAINTING GONE WILD rising 6th - 8th grade

In this exciting class you will explore the unique characteristics of acrylic painting (from realism to abstraction). You’ll learn color mixing, glazing, and various painting applications. You’ll enjoy creating textures with scraping, sponging, and printing! The focus will be on your favorite animals as the subject matter.
Students should bring 4-5 pictures of their favorite pet, jungle animal, colorful birds or marine life.

Collagraphs are created using common and found materials to provide textured surfaces for printing. Impressions are made by rolling ink on the surface, by inking and wiping as for etching, or by a combination of both methods. Bring your own wooden chair – preferably unvarnished. The chair should have flat surfaces (rather than round).

Batik is an exciting technique used to create paintings on cloth utilizing hot melted wax and special dyes. It is an ancient art form that originated in Indonesia and is still very popular today. Enjoy the challenge of working with new materials to create unusual, one-of-a-kind batik paintings or articles of clothing.
Fabric will be available but students wishing to batik clothing items should plan to bring pre-washed 100% cotton or rayon white T-shirts or other clothing items.

IF THE SHOE FITS--Funky Painted Footwear *New Class* rising 6th - 8th grade

In this course students will examine the connection between art and foot-wear throughout the centuries. Students utilize painting, collage, sculpture and stenciling techniques to create original designs and modifications of existing footwear. Students will complete a total of three major projects: Color/collage rendering of "dream" concept footwear, wearable painted pair of canvas shoes, and a fantasy art shoe for display only. This course is a great introduction into the concepts and techniques currently used in the fashion industry. The style of the shoe depends on you!
Students will need to provide a pair of plain white canvas footwear for this class.

Observe and sketch architectural styles in and around Artspace. Begin developing an understanding of western architecture and its history. You will have the chance to become both an architect and an interior designer as you learn to develop plans, drawings, and models complete with color, texture, and pattern. You will create multiple architectural designs and renderings, as well as one 3-dimensional model using only found objects!

CLAY GARDEN CREATIONS *New Class* rising 6th - 8th grade
Let's take a walk outside. See the plants, birds, toads, pets, butterflies, and insects. Then we will make items that can be used outside in the garden to attract the wildlife and decorate the landscape! Our clay work will be made of high-fire clay, suitable for outdoor use.

STAINED GLASS FOR BEGINNERS rising 7th - 10th grade

This class will teach the basics of glass work. We will design and create stained glass works of art using the copper foil method, as developed by Louis Tiffany at the turn of the century. You will learn the history of stained glass and safety methods, as well as techniques for designing, cutting, and soldering. You will also learn about glass fusing techniques, creating unique glass pendants and pins!

Create your own one-of-a-kind hand sewn animal. We will use a variety of colorful fabrics and buttons to make our fun animal characters. These cute creatures will come to life as we add the stuffing!

GOSHI GOSHI SHIBORI--The Japanese Art of Shibori & Indigo Dying rising 6th - 8th grade
Using different methods of shibori (Japanese tie and resist dyeing techniques) students will explore summer imagery and patterns on fabric, by folding, clamping, binding, pole wrapping, and stitching. Pieces will then be dipped in an indigo dye for authentic Japanese color.

PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY *New Class* rising 7th - 10th grade
In this class you will build your very own pinhole camera from simple household materials. We will then take pictures with our cameras around downtown Raleigh. After developing the photographs by hand in a darkroom, we will create a display or collage of our images.

PUPPETRY PLAY rising 3rd – 5th grade

Create a rod puppet from a styrofoam egg, wooden rods, and papier maché. Learn manipulation skills from a professional puppeteer. The class will culminate in a puppet show featuring variety acts performed by your puppet. Experience the excitement of performing in a real puppet theater! You will then have a puppet of your own after the final performance.

BIG ANIMAL SCULPTURE rising 6th - 8th grade
Build your own large-scale animal sculpture using newspaper, masking tape, cardboard, plaster, and acrylic paint! You will also draw a portrait of your finished animal!

NARRATIVE ILLUSTRATION *New Class* rising 7th - 10th grade

This course will focus on the key elements of narration. Students will learn how to develop key frames for a story and understand how they explain particular events in the story. These scenes are the main images for which a longer narrative can be built around. They describe the high points in a story and help to explain the action, succinctly. Final illustrations will be done in pen and ink. This course is great for those who like to sketch. The illustration process and conceptual development will be emphasized.

Matsuri means festival in Japanese, and August is a peak time for festivals and other summer celebrations. In this class we will celebrate the season with cooling summer images, colors, and patterns in Japanese textile and paper crafts such as summer postcards, fish printing on headwraps, and koinobori (fish windsocks).

COLLAGE CREATIONS rising 6th – 8th grade
In this class you will create your own unique collage artwork utilizing painted papers, photographic reproductions, photos, scraps of fabric, elements from magazines, paint, and more. Through collage techniques you will experience a truly unique way of approaching your art, whether creating representational or non-representational works.

Stained Glass for Beginners SPECTACULAR SCULPTURE rising 7th - 10th grade
Explore the many iconic forms used in sculpture throughout the centuries, including mythological people and animals. Then create your own fired clay sculptural masterpiece!

APPLIQUÉ T(een)-SHIRTS *New Class* rising 6th - 8th grade

In this Saturday workshop, you will learn appliqué techniques to create your own t-shirts. Machine and hand stitching will be use to create one-of-a-kind garments. You supply your own t-shirt and we will supply everything else needed including vintage fabric, trim, buttons, fabric pens, and more!

PECULIAR PETS *New Class* rising 3rd - 5th grade
10am - 1:30pm
Peculiar Pets are in stores across the country and now is your chance to make your own! Megan Sullivan and Michelle Lyon will show you how to take a simple pillow form in the shape of a favorite animal, and bring it to life using vintage trim, buttons, and wool felt. Animal forms made with vintage textiles will be supplied, as will all embellishment needs. Just bring your imagination!
