2013 Resident

Maureen Cummins

2013 Summer Artist-in-Residence
Residency: July 2013
Exhibition: August 2 – September 7, 2013

Artspace welcomes Maureen Cummins as the 2013 Summer Artist-in-Residence. For the month of July, Maureen will welcome visitors to her temporary studio, Artspace’s Gallery One. Maureen will spend the residency creating an exhibition that will open in conjunction with the August 2nd First Friday Gallery Walk.

For the past twenty years, Cummins has been creating work that is strongly influenced by her interest in books, history and the social construction of knowledge. She often works with found printed matter, making use of original photographs, documents, and everyday ephemera to create new and disturbing meanings. She often plays with the sense of reverence that people bring to official knowledge and history, using beauty to draw the reader into content that contradicts precisely those values embodied in traditional forms. She seeks to ambush her audience, to generate an experience of surprise, wonder and revelation that is both personal and political.

Since graduating from Cooper Union with a BFA in 1985, Maureen Cummins has cranked presses from California to the Eastern Arctic and produced over 30 artist book editions. She is represented in over 100 public art collections, has received over a dozen funded residencies and grants, and recently won the prestigious Pollock-Krasner award.
