TRACK 1

Hand Papermaking

PAINT A PET (rising 3rd-5th grade)
Learn how to paint yoru friendly furry friends! After studying the eyes, ears, nose,mouth, and body of pets that you choose, you will sketch then paint the pets on canvas.

Students should bring photographs of their favorite pet on the first day of class.

Silksational Silk Painting SILK PAINTING (rising 3rd–5th grade)
Produce dynamic, elegant works of art on silk! Using a resist method and special permanent dyes, a large silk scarf will become your canvas for creating fabulous designs. Your finished product is an original and wearable work of art, also suitable for hanging - to add your own unique touch to your room.

PAINTING BEYOND THE CANVAS (rising 3rd-5th grade)
This class will go beyond the traditional thinking of painting the subject exactly how you see it. You will be encouraged to think outside the box to approach and explore your subjects from many different points of view. You will utilize a variety of tools and techniques using the creative process to make fun and exciting paintings. Discover the fun in painting a variety of subject matter including still life, landscapes, portraits and more.

BIG ON BATIK(rising 6th-8th grade)
Batik is an exciting technique used to create paintings on cloth utilizing hot melted wax and special dyes. It is an ancient art form that originated in Indonesia and is still very popular today. Enjoy the challenge of working with new materials to create unusual, one-of-a-kind batik paintings or articles of clothing.
Fabric will be available but students wishing to batik clothing items should plan to bring pre-washed 100% cotton or rayon white T-shirts or other clothing items.

FUN WITH MOSAICS (rising 3rd–5th grade)
Explore the fun of mosaics! We will create several projects (a flower pot, garden spinner, and your own wall hanging) using traditional and recycled materials. Have fun learning abotu mosaics for art and craft!

CITYSCAPES IN WAX (rising 6th-8th grade)
Using stencil techniques, incised lines, and mixed media, you will design and create encaustic wax paintigs of your own ideal, imagined city. We will look at books, as well as the architecture of downtown Raleigh for inspiration.

PAINTING GONE WILD (rising 3rd-5th grade)
In this exciting class you will explore the unique characteristics of acrylic painting (from realism to abstraction). You’ll learn color mixing, glazing, and various painting applications. You’ll enjoy creating textures with scraping, sponging, and printing! The focus will be on your favorite animals as the subject matter.

Students should bring 4-5 pictures of their favorite pet, jungle animal, colorful birds or marine life.

IN THE TREES(rising 3rd-5th grade)
Draw and paint different types of trees, as well as the animals that live in and around them. Your paintings will show your favorite forest animals such as bluebirds, rabbits, and deer in their native habitats.

AROUND THE WORLD!(rising 3rd-5th grade)
Travel around the world of art to discover the diversity of paintings throughout the ages. We'll stop in France during the 18th century to paint like the Impressionists. Next we’ll land in the U.S. to create action paintings like the 19th century Abstract Expressionists, and then we’re off to Latin America to work on an Amate Bark painting! In this fun class you'll create paintings using the unique materials and styles of artists from around the world.

Exploring the Painted Landscape STAINED GLASS WALL MOSAICS (rising 6th-8th grade)
Get ready to create your own mosaic masterpiece! Develop your own design, transfer it to plywood, and learn a variety of mosaic techniques including glass cutting, classic mosaic laying, and grouting. Your finished piece will be a beautiful, out-of-this-world wall hanging!

FANTASY-TIC SCULPTURES (rising 3rd-5th grade)
In this class we'll create big, colorful sculptures like the French artist iki de sain Phalle. We'll dsign self-portraits or other fantastical creatures and create them in papier mache or plaster. These colorful figurines, embellished wiht paint, beads, glitter, and buttons, will be a great addtion to your room!

Build your own animal sculpture using newspaper, masking tape, cardboard, plaster, and acrylic paint! You will also draw a portrait of your finished animal!

CRAZY ABOUT COLLAGE (rising 3rd–5th grade)
Explore fun and inventive ways to create imagery with collage. We will create animals, portraits and more, using fibers, fabrics, paper, and texture. Be ready to experiment and play with lots of different materials!

THAT'S ME! SUPER-SIZED! *New Class* (rising 3rd-5th grade)
In this class everything is about you! Create an interesting magazine and a life-sized collage all about you! You will use various materials such as wallpaper, wool, fabric, wood, and paint. We’ll have lots of options but you should also bring along some of your personal items to use and trade, such as photos of yourself, your favorite music, favorite magazine, old clothing, buttons, stickers, and more!

From Street to Shirt BASIC ACRYLIC PAINTING (rising 6th-8th grade)
This class will explore the unique characteristics of acrylic paint as a vehicle for expressing your artistic vision. You will master color mixing, paint application methods, and other basic painting techniques that will add to the fun and excitement of creating acrylic paintings! At the end of teh week, ou will have a unique, one-of-a-kind completed work of art that will be ready to display.

By the end of this class you will have developed a one-of-a-kind completed work of art that will be ready to display.
