Alexandra Bravar

Raleigh, NC

Alexandra Bravar was born in San Francisco, CA in 1992, and was raised in Raleigh, NC (though she spent her high school years living in London, England). She received her BFA in sculpture and ceramics from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2016.

Bravar has worked with Tom Rivard, an architect and sculptor, and Elle Knox, a performance and video artist, in Sydney, Australia in 2010, as well as assisted ceramic artist Lindsay Pichaske in Annapolis, Baltimore. Immersing herself in foreign cultures is an important aspect of Bravar’s practice as it exposes her up to new schools of thought, as well as new visual associations that are not prevalent in the United States. In order to broaden her artistic horizons, Bravar completed a six month backpacking journey through South East Asia and Japan from 2013 through 2014.

Bravar has worked in a multitude of medias, but has begun to focus primarily on soft sculpture, basketry, mixed media work, and porcelain burnouts. Bravar’s construction is very tactile, meditative, and mentally restorative, as she finds balance between additive and reductive processes. Her loose approach to making allows her to make quick intuitive decisions, helping her to keep her work spontaneous and visceral. Bravar strives for her work to exist in an anomalous realm, frequently creating material falsehoods and anthropomorphic objects. Alexandra Bravar lives and works in Raleigh, North Carolina.
