Bios
Students planning to apply to college for Fine Arts studies
are required to submit a portfolio showing a specific body of art work.
This body of work takes time and experience to prepare. In this series
of intensive courses you will learn several different techniques and
gain competency in a variety of media, including sculpture, figurative
work, painting techniques, and more.
FALL
SESSION Colleges Want Variety!
September 22 - November 17, 2010

Pinhole Photography
Wednesdays, September 22, 29, & October 6
6 - 8:30pm
Instructor: Tanya Casteel
In this class you will build your very own pinhole camera from simple
household materials. You will then take pictures with your camera
and develop the photographs by hand in a darkroom.
Portfolio Presentation - Open to Anyone!

Cost: $5 if you are not registered for the FALL,
WINTER, or SPRING Session.
In this short workshop we will discuss what a portfolio is, what undergraduate
colleges might expect in your portfolio, criterion for selecting artwork
for this portfolio, and how to present your artwork in a cohesive
manner. We will also discuss what you can anticipate during a scholarship
interview. Please bring questions!
Introduction to Printmaking
Wednesdays, October 13, 20, & 27

Instructor: Sue Soper
Students will learn the basics of college printmaking. Techniques
explored include dry point using zinc, relief printing using linoleum,
and lithography. Previous drawings will be turned into original hand-pulled
prints to include in your portoflio. A still life will also be set
up to assist students with creating new material for prints. Professional
matting of prints will also be discussed.
Contemporary Felting Methods
Wednesdays, November 3, 10, 17

Instructor: Rachel Nicholson
This class will explore the ancient craft of making felt, which dates
to pre-historic times. Students will make several small projects as
they learn to manipulate the medium. These methods include basic felting,
surface designing by drawing with wool fibers, collaging silk fabric,
fibers and yarns into the surface of the felt, and making three dimensional
objects. Each student will complete one large project consisting of
either two-dimensional wall art, a three-dimensional mask, or a sculptural
vessel. |

Drawing
& Sculpting the Figure
January 12, 19, 26, February 2, 9, & 16, 2011

Instructor: Paris Alexander
In this workshop students will learn to identify anatomical reference
points used to structure and proportion an accurate figure drawing.
Students will also use these reference points to render muscle and
weight shifts during the posing of live models. The same concepts
will then be applied to create three-dimensional clay figurative
sculptures. *Models will wear bathing suits. |
SPRING
SESSION Painting techniques
January 12 - February 16, 2011

Water-Based Media Techniques (watercolor & gouache)

Instructor: Susan Martin
In this class students will explore the techniques involved in making
a work of art using watercolor and gouache paints. You will start
at the beginning with how to prepare your paper, cover drawing transfer
techniques, and then go over proper paint application.
Introduction to Oil Paint
April 6 ,13, 20, 27, May 4, 2011

Instructor: Joshua Flint
This course will focus on the successful habits of learning to draw
with a brush and to paint the world around you. Special attention
will be given to learning how to capture what you see quickly and
effectively. Learning to simplify your subject matter and create useful
studies will help you develop a keen eye for design, color, and composition.
In this class you will focus on learning to use oil paints, with an
emphasis on light and shadow, as well as investigating warm and cool
color palettes. Landscape, still-life, and figurative genres will
be our subject matter. |
