Allison Hunter
Allison Hunter
January 17 - March 6, 2009
Allison Hunter is an award-winning professional artist, working and living
in Houston, TX. She has worked in the medium of photography since earning
her Diplome (MFA equivlant) from the Ecole Cantonale d’Art
de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1990. In 1995, Hunter began
working with digital image processing in combination with black and white
photography, jewelry design, and other media at the Integrated Electronic
Art MFA program at Rensselaer in Troy, NY. After earning her MFA in 1997,
Hunter participated in international residencies in Canada, the Czech
Republic, Lithuania, Russia, and Latvia. Her photographic and installation
work is in the permanent collections of museums in the US and Europe.
Her work is handled by Marty Walker Gallery, Dallas; Kidder Smith Gallery,
Boston; Blue Tangerine Contemporary Art, San Francisco; and Gerber-Seid
Fine Art, NYC.
For this exhibition, Hunter will continue her exploration of zoo animals.
The images are shot in natural light with analog film (35 mm and 120 mm)
and then scanned into the computer and manipulated. By digitally editing
out details from the background, the landscape becomes a surreal, eerie
place. The vague backgrounds force the viewers to focus on the details
of the animals in isolation.
