Find out more about Elizabeth Norval, a puppeteer who is teaching one class during the Artspace Summer Arts Program this summer.

1) Tell us about your class and why you’re excited to teach it?

In my Puppet Extravaganza class, students have fun with marionettes and glove puppets at the same time as they are making their own unique rod puppet. It is exciting for me to see students open up to the magic of puppetry. Puppets somehow “speak” to the puppeteer, and creative forces come into play. Shows evolve as puppeteers work together to make them happen. The anonymity provided by the puppet theater creates an environment in which even the shyest person can perform. Puppets are magical!

2) If you could meet any artist, who would it be, and why?

I would love to meet Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets. I have been in awe of his work since I saw my first Muppet Show.

3) What do you do to stay creative?

I have fun with my granddaughter, Ingrid Norval. We experiment with different kinds of puppets, and see what happens!  I also watch and attend puppet shows by other puppeteers.

Puppet Extravaganza
For ages 7-10
August 1 – 5, 1-4pm

This is your chance to both create and perform! Make a unique rod puppet character, complete with costume and wig. Have a great time as you learn how to bring your puppet to life, performing the scenes and skits that you invent! The class will culminate in a performance of a puppet play in a real puppet theater.
