Connect & Create with Pati Reis

On Saturday, March 19, Artspace artist Pati Reis led an embroidery and bookbinding workshop for our monthly Connect & Create series. The workshop coincided with her exhibition, Stitch Chat, in the Upfront Gallery & Lobby; in which you can see her freehand machine-embroidered artwork, site specific installations, and some of the byproducts (including an old sewing machine) of her artistic process. Participants in this two-hour workshop were not afforded the luxury of machine stitching, although the results of their hand-embroidered and bound notebooks were no less fantastic.

If you are interested in learning more about our Connect & Create workshop series, check out our webpage here.

The morning started off with a quick walk-through of the exhibition in the Upfront Gallery & Lobby. Pati explained her work, the process behind it, and what she would like her viewers to take away from it.

Then, after a quick introduction to the day’s project, participants began searching through newspapers to find an appropriate page to use as the cover of their notebooks.

Embroidery interfacing is fused to the back of the newspaper scraps to make them stronger. Without this, the paper would tear under the pressure of the embroidered stitches.

Pati gives a quick demo to explain how to create your design and turn it into a stitched image.

After the design is sketched out on the newspaper, an awl is used to poke holes along the lines.

Then, embroidery floss is stitched through the holes to complete the design.

Once everyone finishes embroidering their covers, Pati teaches them how to make a simple stitched binding to hold their notebooks together.

Punching binding holes through all the sheets of paper is a lot tougher than it sounds!

The finished products make everyone happy!

Thanks to everyone that came out and participated and thanks to Pati for the awesome project!
