FRESH Artist Profile: Linda Ruth Dickinson

FRESH Feature

Find out more about Linda Ruth Dickinson, one of 27 artists juried into the FRESH exhibition at Artspace.

Linda Ruth Dickinson’s work explores the relahionship between what is visible and the mind’s eye.   With vivid hues, the paintings refer to the natural world and the nature of optics — the ethereal and the mark-making process.  A space between worlds.

Tandem II

Linda Ruth Dickinson is a self-taught artist born and raised on the island of Taiwan to Midsestern American parents.  Drawing on this transcultural heritage she seeks to bridge seemingly disparate worldviews by expressing the intangible through universal iconography in a synthesis of Eastern and Western thoughts, traditions and values.

Her art has been exhibited in museums, art centers and galleries throughout the United States and can be seen in numerous private, public, and institutional collections.
2013 saw the advent of Dickinson’s most recent series which continues to this day.  Jennifer Dasal of the North Carolina Museum of Art writes about this new work:

“Linda Ruth Dickinson’s artistic practice and her biography cannot be separated from Asia – in fact, an understanding of her connection to the continent is essential to accurately seeing her works.

While encountering these works, viewers may experience two seemingly conflicting emotions simultaneously, as I did: first, a sense of calm exudes from her precise lines and simplified forms. The calm is followed closely by a second impression – a vibration of sorts, as if one’s eyes move around the canvas rather quickly, buzzing from color to color. Taken together, the sensations are concurrently grounding and transcendent, just as a cultural collide between East and West is sure to be.”

Fun Fact!

I’m told that Chinese is my first spoken language.
