FRESH Artist Profile: E. Taylor Shoop

FRESH Feature

Find out more about Taylor Shoop, one of 27 artists juried into the FRESH exhibition at Artspace.

Taylor Shoop is artist from Northern California who resides in North Carolina. He attended the Californian College of the Arts at the turn of the century, receiving his BFA in sculpture. Clay, metal, stone, glass, and paint are all materials Shoop worked with during his education as part of the guided matriculation through school, but when left to his own devices, it was Found-Object sculptures to which his attention became devoted. The task of researching these ‘dead’, used -up objects, and learning about their history gave new life to the objects and new information to the artist.

His current body of work has brought him back to his camera, applying Found-Object ideas to photography. Shoop’s strives to strip the subjects of context, and breathe life back into the architecture he shoots, by highlighting their physical and visual elements. Shoop treats his resulting photographs as simple objects, materials composed of line and color, meant to be manipulated into two dimensional compositions.

Fun Fact!

Weeks after getting married, my wife and I started to physically build our house with the help of her father and my uncle. For the majority of the time we lived in a tent, using a solar shower, and a coleman stove, and … we are still married.
