Go Figure! Artspace collaboration with Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School

As part of the Go Figure! series in the Fall of 2014, Artspace hosted a few events that featured three figurative artists.  Photographer Laura Heyman, painter Lea Colie Wight and sculptor Holly Fischer were chosen to share with students from Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School about their artistic process and why the human figure continues to be a fascinating subject.  Artspace artist member, Shannon Newby, coordinated with the artists and Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School to ensure the students and artists had a mutually rewarding experience.

Laura Heyman spoke about the challenges of being a woman photographer and the nuances of capturing raw emotions through the camera’s lens.  Lea Colie Wight led students in a figure drawing exercise and recounted her own experiences in portrait painting.  Holly Fischer visited the sculpture class at SRHS and challenged students to work towards being comfortable in their own skin and to let their stories be embodied in their 3D work.  With each encounter, students and artists alike were refreshed in their understanding of the nuanced and compelling human story we all find ourselves in, and the part that art can play in retelling these stories.

One of the most exciting things about this project was the collaboration with Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School.  The school has a special focus on technology, communications and empowering the next generation of leaders.  Teachers work hard to set their students up for success with the skills they need to research, investigate and report on world matters.  So when we saw students come to each event with pen and paper in hand, ready to ask questions and take notes as they learned from each of the artists, we were thrilled!  The broadcasting class even stepped up to the challenge of recording each event and editing the footage that you see below.

What you see below in the pictures and videos is largely the result of this exciting student-led project.  This event series was made possible by a grant from the PNC foundation.  Special thanks to Jodi Aker, the SRHS staff, and the broadcasting class for all of your hard work!
