Artspace Teaches at Hope Elementary School

This spring as part of Artspace’s Youth Outreach program, instructors Gabrielle Corter and Jaclyn Bowie with assistance from intern Jillian Ohl taught local Hope Elementary 4th and 5th graders a little about how art can be tie into a social studies or any educational curriculum.

Every Monday afternoon the Artspace crew would ride down the street to Hope Elementary to have some fun creating and making projects with the students that tied into North Carolina history. Recognizing the rich cultural history that North Carolina was created upon the original settlers of our fine state became the main inspiration for everything from handmade journals, trading cards, fabric pouches, drawn maps, and some amazing plaster masks. Artist-in-Residence Jacyln Bowie used her artistic style of reusing items to create sustainable art to encourage the students to think creatively and responsibly about the world around us. Each student designed a unique symbol to represent themselves and communicate their personal culture with others. Guest Instructor Mimi Herman inspired the students to write creative poetry to unleash their inner performance artist – which they presented to the entire school at the end of the three month program.

As the intern, I know I had an absolute blast learning and working with the kids. Nothing is more rewarding than inspiring youth to make some amazing art that is fun to create. Complete with field trips to the North Carolina Museum of History and NC State’s Gregg Museum of Art+Design, I know I learned a lot about culture and what it means to be a 10 year old again trying to find all the answers to a NC themed scavenger hunt.

You can see some amazing examples of the work created by the students and instructors on exhibit Feelgoodz on Wilmington Street in Raleigh through the month of May.
